about

This serves as my personal/professional blog. I write about zines and alternative press publications in libraries, cataloging, library activism, and cats. I also review books and zines and occasionally publicize events. Here are (talks I've given and an academic page. I founded the Barnard Zine Library and worked there until June 2026, so lots of my intellectual output is there. This is a short bio.

short bio

Jenna Freedman founded the Barnard Zine Library at Barnard College in NYC. Co-foundlings include Radical Reference, Librarians and Archivists with Palestine, and #critlib. Jenna is also a zine maker, who has been making the annual zine Lower East Side Librarian since 2001. Other zines include 14 issues of Unprecedented, which documents the COVID-19 pandemic, a zine about serving on a grand jury, one on a trip to Haiti with librarians and activists, and niche reportage on catalogers discussing Doctor Who. Jenna is an adjunct lecturer in the School of Information Studies at Queens College, CUNY. She has published articles on zine librarianship and presented around the United States and in France on that topic as well as on other themes of library activism.
